León Santos, the soft-spoken yet strong-willed founder of CEDICAM, described his work as a dual and parallel process. Detoxifying the land, getting it off chemical dependency, also means detoxifying the people, freeing their spirits from ideas “of the North”: ideas that make them feel dependent, believing that their knowledge is somehow “less than.” A large part of the organization’s work focuses on promoting and improving on farming methods that many in the community already practice, but don’t necessarily recognize as “technology.” The workshops validate traditional techniques and identities; these identities are inscribed in the land and infused with traditional farming practices.
